Kangol Hats History

Kangol Hats was founded in 1930s by Jacques Spreireen, his beginning idea was to produce hats for workers, golfers and especially soldiers.  Jacques together with some family members started the Kangol factories in England.  They were the major beret suppliers to the armed forces during World War II and they became one of the most famous headwear companies in England.

The name Kangol reflects the original production where the K was for knitting, the ANG was for angora, and the OL was for wool.  Although no Kangol hat has ever actually been manufactured in Australia, the Kangaroo logo was adopted by Kangol in 1983 because Americans commonly asked where they could get “the Kangaroo hat”.

Kangol’s iconic bucket hat or bell shape first originated in the 1970’s where it was quickly adopted by the burgeoning hip hop culture of the 1980’s New York.  To this day, the bucket hat still remains fashionable. The bucket hats were made popular by many hip-hop and rappers artists.  They wore the bucket hats in videos, covers, films, interviews, but most importantly they wore the hats everywhere; they made the hat part of their daily wardrobe.  The most popular ones being LL Cool J, Eminem and Run DMC.

The 504 Kangol Cap - is the iconic original cap that was introduced in 1954.  The cap gets its name from the block number on which it is shaped.  A stiffened peak was added to the original cap to create this classic and timeless style.

The 504 Cap in wool and knitted materials became really popular in America after the famous movie Jackie Brown in 1997.  Pam Grier and Samuel Jackson do a wonderful performance that even gets them nominations.  The popularity of the cap really increases after this movie, not only does Samuel L Jackson wear the cap during the entire movie but he continues wearing it off the set.  You can always see him wearing a variety of Kangol caps in interviews, out and about and in other films.  He has made the 504 wool cap, the 504 ventair cap and the spitfire extremely famous.  He made these caps so popular that they are often known as the Samuel L. Jackson cap.
