The famous Miller Great Gatsby Hat collection is inspired by the 2013 romantic drama film.  The film is based on the 1925 Novel The Great Gatsby by Scott Fitzgerald.  The novel is set in the Jazz Age on Long Island, near New York City, the novel depicts first person narrator Nick Carraway’s interactions with mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby and Gatsby’s obsession to reunite with his former lover Daisy Buchanan.    

The Great Gatsby film was set in the 1920’s era.  The characters all wore 1920’s fashion, the men wore tailcoat tuxedos and underneath a white wingtip collar shirt.  To match the tuxedos they wore a top hat, a bow tie, a walking stick or a pocket watch.  The trousers were high waisted and they wore double breasted vests with a single breasted jacket.   1920’s fashionable suits were worn with Boater Hats, derby hats and wide brim fedoras.   The most informal style of hat worn at the time was the newsboy flat cap.

The Fedora is a hat with a soft material, a snap brim and indented crown.  We can shape Fedora hats in a variety of crowns, but the most typical ones being a “teardrop” or a “centerdent”. Crown heights will vary depending on the style anywhere between 4” and 4 ⅝”. Brims will run anywhere between 2 ½ to 3”. The name Fedora originally came from a dramatic play written in 1882 by playwright Victorien Sardou. The play was first performed in the US in 1889. Bernhardt played Princess Fedora Romanov, the heroine of the play. In the play she wears a center dent soft brim hat. The hat was fashionable for women, and the women’s rights movement adopted it as a symbol. After Edward Prince of Wales wore them in the 1920s, it became popular among men for its stylishness and its ability to protect the wearer’s head from the wind and weather. 

By the 1920s fedoras got popular, it became a staple of men’s fashion and would be worn in public places. In the 1940s the fedora hats became a significant trend in America. Many films re-popularized the fedora hat in the 1940s, like Humphrey Bogart in the film Casablanca and many others. As a result, this style soon spread to local jazz and blues musicians, who adopted this look and brought it to their audiences.

The classic flat top hat is without a doubt one of the most formal hats ever made. The fur felt top hat was popular at the end of the 19th Century. We also know top hats as Madhatter Hats, or Coachman hats. Mostly, top hats are made of Fur Felt and wool felt materials. Until World War I, the black fur felt was a standard item of formal outdoor wear by upper-class males for both daytime and evening usage.

Homburg Hats by Miller Hats

The homburg hat was popular at the beginning of the 20th Century. It comes with a center crease crown and a rolled bound-edge trim, with a double bow grosgrain hat band.  Unlike the bowler or the top hat, the Homburg was not as firm, but it was a slightly stiffened soft fur felt hat to keep its shape.  Overall, it was an elegant felt hat that was not as formal as the derby hat. But they often wore it when strolling in town or in place of a boater hat.  

Until about 1914, the Homburg hat kept its position on the hat formality scale. The repp band on the brim was sometimes light grey, while the hat band was the same color or darker. Over time, the brim curl diminished, and the crown lost some height.  After WWI, the hat became darker; black homburg hats were the most popular color, especially in the 1950s.  

Former UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill wore the Homburg hat during World War II, they often saw him in London wearing a homburg with a black suit and with formal trousers.  

Dwight D. Eisenhower wore a dark grey homburg hat with a stroller suit for his inauguration on January 20, 1953.  Al Pacino made the homburg very famous by wearing it in the famous film The Godfather, for which reason the hat is often called a “Godfather”.  Many Jazz singers also wore the famous Homburg, musicians such as John Lee Hooker, Duke Ellington, and many preachers of the time.

Actually, it is said that an Ecuadorian named Francisco Delgado made the first Panama hat woven in the year 1629.  Since then, the weaving of Panama bodies has remained substantially the same - performed by native families who pass their skills on down from generation to generation.  

The tough “toquilla fibers’’ come from the leaves of palm plants.  They wash the shreds before they are rolled and flattened into the form suitable for weaving.  When the shredded leaves are processed and the fibers are in the form desired for weaving, they are sorted and selected according to length, thickness and color.  The more uniform the fibers are for each body, the better the finished hat can be. The finest grade of fibers produces the highest quality hat, not only because fineness of fiber results in fine texture but also because a hat of fine fibers takes considerably more time and effort to weave than a hat of course fibers.

The bowler hat, also known as the derby hat in the United States,  is a firm fur felt or wool felt hat with a rounded crown, created by the London hat-makers Thomas and William Bowler in 1849. Kangol Hats History

 Kangol Hats was founded in 1930s by Jacques Spreireen, his beginning idea was to produce hats for workers, golfers and especially soldiers.  Jacques together with some family members started the Kangol factories in England.  They were the major beret suppliers to the armed forces during World War II and they became one of the most famous headwear companies in England.    

The name Kangol reflects the original production where the K was for knitting, the ANG was for angora, and the OL was for wool.  Although no Kangol hat has ever actually been manufactured in Australia, the Kangaroo logo was adopted by Kangol in 1983 because Americans commonly asked where they could get “the Kangaroo hat”.

Kangol’s iconic bucket hat or bell shape first originated in the 1970’s where it was quickly adopted by the burgeoning hip hop culture of the 1980’s New York.  To this day, the bucket hat still remains fashionable. Doc Holliday Cowboy Hat

We know Doc Holliday as the deadly doctor of the American West.  His mother died of tuberculosis when he was 15.  6 years later, once he had graduated from dental school, he found out that he had also contracted the disease.  He consulted several physicians, but they told him he had only a short time to live.  Because of the illness, it forced him to find another way to earn a living. 

Doc was a most unusual character. He was educated and refined. Such things were uncommon.  He was fluent in Latin, played the piano very well, was a sharp dresser, and displayed the manners of a southern gentleman.  His intelligence made him a “natural” at gambling, which quickly became his main means of income

Wyatt and Doc met and formed a friendship in Shanssey’s that would last for years.  They met again in Tombstone and were part of the gunfight at the O.K. Corral.  At the end of the day Doc Holliday enjoyed the reputation of being one of the most fearless men on the frontier, and whose devotion to his friends in the climax of the fiercest ordeal was inextinguishable.   If he was ever in trouble, there was a large circle of friends ready to rally, to his relief.  Doc Holliday claimed he almost lost his life nine times.  They attempted to hang him four times, and they shot him five times.    

In the 1993 Tombstone film, Val Kilmer portrays Doc Holliday and his performance is outstanding . The requirement of being an SASS member is to adopt a shooting alias appropriate to your specific character or profession of the 19th century.  They then developed their costume accordingly. One of the most famous figures of the American West 19th century era is the famous Wyatt Earp.  Known primarily for his notorious gunfight at the O.K Corral in Tombstone, Arizona in 1881.  Over the years, he made a living by gambling, saloon-keeping, mining and real estate speculation.  He also worked with a personal secretary to write his memoirs.  He died in 1929, but in 1931 the first major Earp biography “Wyatt Earp, Frontier Marshal” by Stuart N. Lake published and became a bestseller. They established Wyatt Earp as a folk hero here among millions of Americans searching for inspiration and excitement during the hard times of the Great Depression. 
Many years later, they created a film called Tombstone based on the events in Tombstone, Arizona, including the gunfight at the O.K. Corral and the Earp Vendetta Ride, during the 1880s.  It depicts several western outlaws and lawmen, such as Wyatt Earp, Virgil Earp, Morgan Earp, Johnny Ringo, Doc Holliday and others.

Blues Brothers Hat for men

The Blues Brothers are a blues and soul band that became popular in 1978.  The band was made by comedians Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi, they later became famous for their Hollywood film “The Blues Brothers”.  The idea of wearing a suit in the film was primarily inspired by Jazz performers from the ‘40s, 50’s, 60s who almost always wore a formal suit.  On the other hand, the idea of wearing a fedora hat was inspired by John Lee Hooker, a famous blues singer who wore fashionable hats.  For The Blues Brothers film, Dan and John wore black suits, with white shirts, skinny ties, black glasses and the famous stingy brim black fedora hat.
